Warm 250g Protection for Winter Turnout

A 250g horse rug provides more insulation than a lightweight rain sheet or 100g turnout rug. It is commonly chosen for clipped horses, finer breeds, older horses and horses that require additional warmth during wet, windy or colder conditions.

The insulated filling works by trapping a layer of warm air around the horse’s body. The rug does not generate heat, so selecting the correct weight depends on the individual horse and its environment.

An unclipped native horse with access to good shelter may require less insulation than a fully clipped Thoroughbred in an exposed field. Age, body condition, feeding, activity levels and overnight temperatures should also be considered.

The detachable neck allows the amount of coverage to be adjusted without replacing the whole rug. Attach it when the horse needs additional protection around the neck or remove it when temperatures become milder.

Regular care is important for maintaining the performance of the outer material. Dried mud, grease and detergent residue can affect water repellency and breathability.

Remove loose dirt with a soft brush whenever possible and avoid unnecessary washing. When the rug needs a full clean, follow the care label and use a detergent suitable for waterproof horse rugs.

The rug should be professionally cleaned or reproofed when water begins soaking into the outer material rather than forming droplets on the surface.

With the neck attached, the rug provides extended protection along the horse’s neck and mane. This can be particularly useful for clipped horses, horses living out and animals exposed to persistent wind or rain.

During milder conditions, the neck can be removed to create a standard-neck turnout rug. This increases ventilation and allows owners to adjust coverage without changing the entire rug.

The updated Rastrick V2 shape is designed to provide improved coverage and comfort. Tall shoulder gussets create additional room through the front of the rug, supporting a more natural range of movement while the horse walks, grazes or plays.

At the withers, a soft faux-fur pad cushions the area where the rug rests against the horse. Its waterproof upper helps prevent the pad from becoming saturated during wet weather.

Inside, the smooth anti-rub and anti-static polyester lining reduces direct friction against the coat and helps the rug slide more easily over the shoulders as the horse moves.
