Warm 200g Insulation for Colder Stable Conditions

The John Whitaker Rastrick V2 Stable Rug contains a warm 200g polyfill designed to help retain the horse’s body heat during colder stable conditions.

A 200g stable rug is generally considered a mediumweight option. It provides more insulation than a lightweight stable sheet without the bulk of a heavy winter rug, making it a versatile choice for autumn, winter and cooler spring nights.

The quilted construction helps hold the filling in place and distribute insulation across the horse’s body. This creates a consistent layer of coverage while maintaining the rug’s shape during regular use.

The Rastrick V2 can be worn on its own or incorporated into a carefully managed layering system. For example, it may be placed beneath a suitable outer rug when additional warmth is required, provided both rugs fit correctly and do not create pressure or restrict movement.

Rugging requirements vary considerably between horses. A fully clipped horse may need more insulation than an unclipped native type in the same stable. Age, health, body condition, shelter and stable ventilation should also be considered.

Regular temperature checks are more reliable than choosing a rug based solely on the season. Place a hand underneath the rug behind the shoulder rather than judging warmth from the horse’s ears or legs.

Comfortable Standard-Neck Fit with Wither Protection

The John Whitaker Rastrick V2 features a standard-neck cut that provides insulated body coverage without extending along the horse’s neck.

A standard-neck stable rug can be a practical choice for horses that do not require full-neck protection. It allows more ventilation around the neck and may be preferred for horses that become warm beneath combo rugs.

The cut also provides greater flexibility when layering. A separate neck cover, hood or liner can be used only when appropriate rather than remaining permanently attached to the main rug.

At the withers, a soft faux-fur pad cushions the area where the front of the rug rests against the horse. This helps distribute pressure and reduce friction around a sensitive part of the body.

The wither pad should sit centrally and remain smooth when the rug is fastened. It should not be pulled tightly backwards or allowed to press heavily against the base of the mane.

When checking the fit, ensure the chest closes comfortably and the neckline does not pull backwards across the withers. The horse should be able to lower its head, eat and lie down without the rug becoming tight across the shoulders.

Remove the rug regularly and inspect the withers, shoulders and chest for flattened hair, heat, tenderness or early signs of rubbing.

Secure T-Clip Fastenings and Crossed Surcingles

A secure stable rug must stay correctly positioned while allowing the horse to move, eat, rest and lie down naturally.

The Rastrick V2 uses flat T-clip fastenings at the chest. These provide quick closure without the bulk of traditional buckle fastenings. Slider adjustments allow the front fit to be altered according to the horse’s chest and shoulder shape.

An additional hook-and-loop chest catch helps hold the two front panels together. This makes the rug easier to fasten and provides an extra point of security at the chest.

Two crossed belly surcingles run underneath the horse to help stabilise the rug. They should be adjusted evenly so the rug remains secure without the straps becoming tight against the belly.

As a general fitting guide, there should be approximately a hand’s width between the surcingles and the horse’s body. Straps that hang excessively low can create a risk of the horse catching a hoof, while straps that are too tight may cause discomfort.

At the rear, the PVC-coated fillet strap helps prevent the rug from moving forwards or lifting excessively. Its smooth, wipe-clean surface is easy to maintain and is less likely to hold bedding and stable debris than an uncovered fabric strap.

All fastenings should be checked daily for damage, twisting or incorrect adjustment.

Padded Tail Coverage and Practical Stable-Rug Design

The John Whitaker Rastrick V2 includes a large padded tail cover that extends insulation and coverage across the top of the horse’s hindquarters.

This padded section complements the main 200g filling and helps reduce exposed areas at the rear of the rug. It also encourages the rug to sit neatly over the quarters while the horse is standing or resting.

The PVC-coated fillet strap runs beneath the tail and helps keep the rear of the rug positioned. Unlike elasticated leg straps, a single fillet strap is quick to check and easy to wipe clean.

The rug’s classic navy base is finished with contrasting red and white detailing. Whitaker-branded straps along the chest and belly give the stable rug a coordinated and recognisable appearance.

Because the rug is designed for stable use, the outer material is not intended to withstand persistent rain or wet turnout conditions. The horse should be changed into a waterproof turnout rug before going outside in rain.

The Rastrick V2 is particularly useful for overnight stabling, colder indoor conditions and controlled layering. It may also be worn during dry travel when the 200g filling is appropriate for the temperature, although the horse should be monitored carefully to prevent overheating.

Clean and dry the rug thoroughly before long-term storage. Store it in a breathable rug bag away from moisture and rodents.
